Yeah, they put that in sometime after 6C75 and before 6C92. For what it's worth, the "Hello" actually fades in. It looks cool.

I'd rather they have the new iMac sitting there looking down, then look up and have "hello" or a happyface appear on it's screen. Whatever, it doesn't really affect me that much, I very rarely see the startup sequence, only after new system updates.

I was always thinking that the boot mac was in the ROM until i thought about it seeing this post you dont get that mac till it detects your system... I wonder how i could go about customizing it. I`m going to check it out i`ll let you know if i get anyware with that

That smiling face has been taking out now, replaced by an Apple logo.

old world systems (beige g3 and earlier) had that in a physical ROM on the motherboard. New world systems (B/W G3 and later) have a software based rom file... and if hadn't been up since 5am I could probably remember its official name

I think OS X somehow overrides whats in the ROM, as I'm on a Beige G3 and the start up icon in X and 9 are different...

there are many things that i would edit about my system but that seems pretty heavy stuff

I really dont care for it. The smiley mac is the only remeant of the classic operation system (sans classic itself, and the mouse pointer). I wish they would leave it in for old times sake. I'll be sad to see it go.

I really like the new hello. Very post-modern feel to it. I'd prefer it to the Apple logo by a long shot, although the Apple logo seems more logical from a "what is my computer doing" novice perspective.

    Looks nice.

I'll barely ever see it, since OS X only needs to be rebooted after some installations.

I think it's a good change. When my mother started using computers (Macs!) she asked me what that funny little picture was when it was 'warming up.' I told her it was a graphic of a 17 year old computer. She couldn't quite understand why. Putting an Apple logo up instead seems to define more that this is not the Classic Mac OS, and new users can identify with Apple's logo (most of the time).
