the other day...

... I'm visiting a friend of mine at his home, here in CA. Havent seen the guy for a while, known him since college days, more than 12 years ago - anyway, he works for a software company which makes apple / pc applications.

To make a long story short -

After chit-chatting for a while, we venture to his computer desk, where I asked him to show me his new dual amd setup he just received (I am interested in such a setup). Also on the desk is a cinema display running osX - always having been an apple fan, I play around w/ it for a bit (he was getting us food from the kitchen) and I was shocked!

So whatever this post will cause, I'm sharing this info simply for fun -

Having played with G4's at a local apple store over the past couple of months, I immediatley noticed an enormous performance jump. It was huge! I mean, I know how it takes apps to launch a while and playing w/ the menu's sometimes (even w/ the dual 800's) you notice lag - this thing was screeming through it all! Just about the time he comes back to the desk, I had itunes playing w/ large visualization running, 3 quicktime movies playing, assorted apps open, and the thing was still flying through its paces! Now like i said before, doing similar work on even the dual 800's @ the store provoked some sort of slow down, especially while running the visualization in itunes!

I was like, w00-h00, what do we have here? I looked around, couldnt find anything remotley resembling a current G4 powermac, only thing i say where 2 generic computer cases, one obviously being the dual amd setup, the other... G5 maybe???

Anyway, my friend was a bit "annoyed" by my discovery, as he quickly diverted my attention to the amd setup...

He never brought up the Mac, and I on the other hand never felt like asking him what he had...

Anyway, maybe its nothing, but i know what i saw was deffinitley no dual G4... at least not @ 800mhz.

D.

I was in the Apple Store at Tysons Corner the day after x-mas. I had to wait at the genius bar to exchange my iPod (but it didnt take a genius to see that the wheel was not working). The guy in front of me was getting shocked by his iBook everytime he used it. He told the 'genius' that the jolt was strong enough to register on a meter.

While the genius was preparing the ppr wrk to have the book sent off, the huy said that he had called Apple w/the problem.

When he told the tech that the iBook was shocking him every time he put it obn his lap, the tech said 'Apple doesn't make laptops, they make notebooks.' Huh?

    Anyways, made me laugh.

You should try to get another look at the machine if you can.

Tell us the guy's address and we'll send a posse out there to break in and get that machine!

Apple System Propfil[l]er, wouldnt that be like the GUI library

    Oh, nerd humor...

Any how, it really boggles my mind how stupid some of the people at these stores are.

    2 stories:

    1. I was in London Drugs the other day watchin the xbox (Im really NOT impressed) when I over heard a womans conversation with a sales clerk about buying a laptop. They went over the normal stuff (CPU speed, RAM, harddrive, size) and then she asked about 2d, the guy says "yes, every note book is capable of handling 2D very well". Then she askes about 3d and the guy says "No, only Toshiba notebooks support 3D".

Im sorry, but Idont think that a GF2go is necessary for 3d.

At another London Drugs (gotta love that store) I was talking to a friend of mine who is "cheif computer technician" (meaningless title since this guy doesnt know shit from apple butter) and the new sony Viao's were in (this was a while back, when they first got in) and I walked up to it and said, "wow, these are cool little note books"

    "Ya" he says

"And look," I say "Theres USB"

    "No, thats Firewire" he says

I point out the serial bus symbol, and he says "No, thats the universal connection symbol, that doesnt mean its USB"

So I pojnt out that if its an Apple notebook it would be the firewire symbol, and since its a sony it would be the iLink symbol

    "Your wrong" he says

So I point out the shape of the plug

"Listen," he says "Im the computer guy here, I think I know trhese things"

With that I say "whatever" and leave.

OK, so how did we get so sidetracked as to go from a story of a faster OSX machine to whether or not the person behind the counters knows anything?
  • Reply 7 of 20
'Cause probably his "friend" is very likely imaginary or, maybe, just maybe, he actually stumbled into something...

If so, good news, if not, why bother speculating?

'cause these people think this guy is full of it.

You think Apple would allow a company to let its employee take their hot mystery box home for software development? No they wouldn't. Said box, if it existed, would be in the R&D and/or the software testing lab.

Maybe he was looking at an Aqua skin on a Wintel OS?

Okay for all future people who want to post these stories, you're going to have to tell us what it said in the Apple System Profiler, or we just won't believe you. Sorry, but that's the way it goes. It's stupid, on your behalf, not to do it otherwise. So, check it out and get back to us. Thanks.

"I checked and there was no system profiler installed. Then I ripped one half off and the CPU was blank, neither saying G4 nor G5. After torturing my friend he confessed it was Aqua-themed Linux connected to his other dual AMD machine. The doctors say he'll recover soon."

Unfortunately, such stupidity is not limited to PC salesman. I was in a John Lewis shop here in the UK before christmas, and visited the Apple section, where they had a row of CRT iMacs (note: a month before MWSF). There was an Apple employed guy there to show off the line, who insisted that all the current CRT iMacs had an nVidia GeForce2 Mx with 32 Mb of vRAM. I even showed him Apple System Profiler, but he was still having none of it - saying that the display models were old stock. He didn't even recognise that incorporating a different Manufacturer's chip would require a complete mobo redesign!

On <a href="http://www.architosh.com"; target="_blank">Architosh you can see that that their rumor source and common sense are right . G5 is comming and those so much talked about G4 apollo are for the next generation iMacs( rev b). Who will get this new PPC in the summer or sooner, but that's not possible i guess.

G5 are going to be announced soon!!
