Question regarding voice activated dialing

I am considering the iPhone 3G. One of the things that is "missing" is the ability to have voice activated dialing.

If Apple decides to add this feature......would it be a software fix....or should I wait to buy a future version of the iPhone?

    I hear MacSpeech are releasing a version of Dictate for the iPhone, therefore I can only assume that such functionality can be added by means of a software upgrade.
