i mean how hard would it be to add this to the iphone and ipod touch? i like the AIM app but it dosnt work in the backround and thats basically makes it useless.
I was bummed that Apple didn't include a camera in the 2nd gen IPod TOUCH. That would have made future ichat video conferencing possible. How cool would that be? A camera in the front for video chats over wifi?

As Apple have not yet implemented the puch facility for application yet (it is coming), they can't release an iChat app that would provide automatic notification in the background.
Once the application push service is turned on later this month I suspect that the AIM application will be updated to enable background notifications, and your problem will be solved.
