Kernel task periodically consumes CPU and freezes compy

I've got a problem where the computer seems to get totally taken over by a process called "Kernel Task" that will for a few seconds, completely tie up the CPU. Then it lets go and I can operate for a few seconds. Then it jumps back up again, freezing the computer until it lets up again a few seconds later. so I go through the state of freezing and unfreezing.



I've tried quitting all applications (which takes some time since I have to do that between freezes) and the problem persists until I restart the machine.



Any idea what's going on and how I can debug this?



I'm on 10.5.4 on a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo MBP
