How to tell which type of cell network is used when connected to Wi-Fi

Sorry if this question has already been answered -- I've tried searching for this on the forums and elsewhere, but it's been tricky to find the right combination of search terms.

My iPhone 3G will automatically detect and join a Wi-Fi network when possible, and the status indicator at the top of the screen indicates when it does (the cell network icon, whether it be GPRS, EDGE, or 3G, is replaced by the Wi-Fi icon). I live in an area of decent EDGE coverage but on the fringe of 3G coverage.

How can I tell which type of cellular technology is being used (3G or EDGE) when my iPhone 3G is connected to a Wi-Fi network (without manually turning Wi-Fi off)?
