it seems that Apple will remove the minimize in place feature from the final version of jaguar. But it is not completely clear it will happen. Can anyone clarify this question?

Minimize in place has been gone for a LONG time.

It was never meant to be seen by the public eye.

Thanks Brad, but why? Minimize in place seems to be a very useful addition to the interface. If I understand well what I have read, it is an improved version of what we got in NeXTSTEP and Solaris many years ago. I realize however that this is not necessarily a guiding principle in making decisions about GUI.

Wonder if the feature will be made available in TinkerTool type utility?

On railheaddesign i?ve seen the <a href="http://www.railheaddesign.com/pages/various/jaguar/images/JagMovies.sit"; target="_blank">movies</a> of that minimize in place funktion (a.k.a. "miniaturize") and i found it very smart and very useful. it is far more functional and space savy as windowshade and it is much much cooler. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

while I can?t see a big advantage by dragging minimized windows out of the dock (altough it?s a nice thing) I see big advantages in miniaturize a window in place. i can?t understand why apple take this out of jag?s functionality... maybe they will save this as a kind of breakthrough finder feature for 10.3 (like now the springloaded folders) or so... <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

i hope we can tinker that funciton soonly with some freeware or see a further developement of the unsanity windowshadeX.

b.t.w. a way to make that function even better would be to add the name of the miniaturized window under its symbol and to let the user choose on the fly (and not only in the preferences) wether the window should minimized or miniaturezed (f.e: click button = minimize in dock, doubleclick window bar = miniaturize in place)

I remember using minimize in place in earlier releases of Jag and it worked fine.

Can't help thinking Apple decided they'd put enough goodies into 10.2 and they were going to keep some back for future releases.

Anthony is right. Minimize-in-place would have made Jaguar have 151 new features, rather than 150. You know Apple just couldn't ship it like that.

Actually, there were some problems with the implementation. One minor problem was that the contents didn't refresh like real minimized windows do. The bigger problems, though, dealt with screen clutter. To be frank, having several of them on your screen got to be annoying very quickly, mostly because of how they float on top of **everything**.

If Apple were to clean it up a bit and maybe introduce the oft-discussed concept of piles, then I can surely see it being reintroduced in a later build.

Seems to me that Minimize in Place, with the icons floating above *everything* will make sense when they finally eliminate the desktop.

I hate the piles. Nothing a little <a href="http://www.preparationh.com/"; target="_blank">Preparation H</a> couldn't fix, though. Wait. You mean THOSE piles? Ah, I got it.

Yes, piles would be cool and I think that they are definitely coming once we get better meta-data support. I just hope that meta-data doesn't complicate our lives even more. This discussion really isn't on topic, but meta-data with user-created things can get like the stacks of articles in my office: one article per stack because they are all a little different, and then I might as well have done nothing to organize, which is what I often do. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> Surely there will be a better implementation than that....I hope. (I'm thinking about keywords in iPhoto. YAFIDU. [yet another feature I don't use.?SFB])

I mailed a looooooong essay on Minimize in Place to Apple believe it or not, in Feedback. Little features like these save me so much time, and of course look cool too!

Maybe a petition to save Minimize in Place? (Half serious here, would it work?)

Also the yellow warning badge over crashed apps must be coming to Jaguar, it just makes sense. Nevertheless I asked Apple to keep it in.

Everyone if you want to see Minimize in Place then mail apple!

What part of "It was never meant to be seen by the public eye" do you not understand? As far as Apple may say publicly, the feature never existed.

edit: I know the petition idea is weird considering the feature is in a beta but I hope it doesn't become the Single Window Mode of 10.2. Don't you want Minimize in Place?

I don't think you're getting what Brad is saying. We never should have known about minimize in place. It was never displayed publicly, so we shouldn't know about it. It was in a private build, for people restricted by NDA's, who had some voice in the process (presumably). If they (that is, those who have a right to know) think it's a good feature, hopefully they've made their views known. Apple's not going to be listening to some pirate complaining about a feature that was pulled for who knows what reason.

Aren't Window Shading and Minimize In Place the same thing? I mean, Window Shading was in OS 9. Can't people petition Apple to add it as a feature to OS X. Even if the people aren't supposed to know that they toyed with the idea and had a framework for it, Apple doesn't have to publicly admit anything. They can just enable it again and claim that they added it at the last minute or something. That's what I don't get. It's not like it's a feature that didn't exist before, it's just a feature that isn't in OS X. If people request it, it would be stupid to ignore it. (unless it's only a minority of the people)

Of course this is all mute if I'm wrong about Window Shading and Minimize In Place being different.

A petition just sounds like wasted energy though. By all reports minimize in place was 'pretty cool', so there had to be something else crippling it.

The 'always floats on top' looks like it could use more thinking.

Or maybe it used a fugly hack somewhere that always made Office corrupt files. Who knows.

It just seems like something marked 'not ready for prime time', not something marked 'stupid, forget about it'. There's no reason for a petition for something marked 'not done yet'.

If it's not here by 10.3, _then_ I'll scream.

pyr3 you make a good point, and convey what I what I was trying to get at. Window Shades were useful and needed in OS 9. Granted in OS X there is the Dock, but this is slower, and if you just want to check the status of something behind a current window, like a download, this is quicker. Minimize in Place is even more useful, however. Assuming it would update, you could see the status of something, not just the title bar. To get around being on top, Apple could just add a transparency slider for MIP in Prefs.

I am not a pirate. I do not have 10.2. I don't have that much bandwith! I simply read this thread, the one at Apple discussions, and others. Now considering it still needs refining it makes sense that perhaps it isn't in the latest build, but if it doesn't show up in 10.2 GM then I doubt it will ever be in 10.2.

    I don't think petition is the right word you're looking for anyway. This would be more of a request, I think this because I can already hear Jobs at the Keynote "And our third biggest request was... {que words "Third Biggest Request" across screen}..}

Windowshading and minimize in place are two very different things. One was a pretty lame way of dealing with no method to get things out of the way easily and the other is an iconified version of the window anywhere on your desktop. It would zoom in and out like folder opening. Very cool, but pretty problematic in its own way (like, Where do they go on your screen?)
