Getting Airport Extreme, Time Machine and OWC Mercury Elite Drive to work together

I would like to backup my MacBook using Time Machine. I currently own an Airport Extreme router and an OWC Mercury Elite Drive. When I attempt to backup my MacBook to by OWC drive wirelessly, I get the following error message from TIme Machine:

"The backup volume could not be mounted."

I have tried a lot of different adjustments I found on the internet but none of them have worked. (For example: creating a .sparsebundle file locally and then transfer it to my OWC drive and entering the following into Terminal:

defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1)

Does anyone have a OWC Mercury Elite drive and is successfully backing up using TIme Machine?

Per Apple you can't use Time Machine with an Airport Extreme. You can use Time Machine with Time Capsule or with any drive being shared by a Mac. But not with an Air Disk served with an Airport Extreme.
