My Mac runs so slowly now

I am finding that my MacBook Pro is sluggish as all hell of late.

Especially Safari is a stand out performer when it comes to bogging down the system.

Is there a general approach to cleaning it all up and hoping to speed it up, or would you just recommend going the whole hog re-installing the OS and starting from the beginning?

Also, if I have my whole computer backed up thru Time Machine and I do a reinstall, is it easy to re-add all my folders like documents and music and movies and mail? Will Time machine be able to do this or will it see my new clean and empty machine and empty all of it's contents to match the machine?

I am running an intel macBook Pro core duo with a gig of ram.

Thanks.

    1) Reboot.

    2) Add RAM.

Those take care of the vast majority of slowdowns. Reinstalling isn't likely to help, especially if it comes from a backup. You'll end up with the same caches, the same config files, etc. This isn't Windows. It's much more deterministic.

Safari-specific: Empty the Cache (Safari menu). This can result in a nice speedup.
