This happened just an hour ago, i was listening to music, and was shuffling through my iTunes library when suddenly the speakers when quiet. Then i unplugged the back cable then replugging it then only the right speaker works. At first i thought i messed up my speakers but then i tried it on my laptop it worked fine. Then i thought i must have fried the audio port. But then i said to mysefl. how? Anyways there were so many questions but only one haunts me. The one if i fried the port. If anyone has a similar problem please let me know. i dont want to stick only one speaker for the rest of my iMacs life.... and my warranty is up so i cant get it replaced.. HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Unplug any external microphones, speakers or headphones and check to see if the problem is still there when listening to the iMac's internal speakers. If you can hear sound from both speakers, there's something wrong with one of the devices you had plugged in.

If you still can't hear any sound from one of the speakers, check the audio balance in the Sound panel in System Preferances. Play with it to see that the speaker is definately not working. If you can get sound out of them both, problem solved, if not, you'll need a new logic board.

If that's the case, and seeing as it's out of warranty, it's safe for you to open it up and look for obvious damage on the logic board (make sure it's not plugged in of course). If it's blown capacitors (a common problem with these macs), they can be replaced without buying a new logic board if you can find someone with enough soldering experience.

yea my external and internal speakers are fine. i dont really want a new logic board just because the audio out is broken... but yea your right most likely is the logic board... i dont know how to take it apart because i dont see screws anywhere and i dont want to start prying open the case. so if you know a good tutorial please let me know. honestly this isnt as big of a deal, its just annoying to having to listen through one speaker only.
