Jaguar family licensing?

Did I miss something on this? I read a MacCentral article, where Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal was writing about 10.2. He mentioned something near the end about $199 for a Jaguar family version that allowed it to be installed on up to 5 computers?

A certain "Mr. Jones", whom I haven't seen post anything in quite some time.

There was also David's Stone, Lucida, and the Templar Knights. No, wait. I made that last one up.

Jones called it "Glove." Note that the license can be used for up to 5 computers. Gloves have five fingers.

Let's hope Lucida and David's Stone happen soon.

Fascinating! Your investigative prowess impresses me, oh wise Mandricard. You follow only the juiciest of rumors and your quasi-institutional memory is always ready to verify their accuracy.

Do you remember the poetic poster descibing nSync (or something similar) years ago? I wonder whether (s)he had a premonition about the upcoming iSync?

Unfortunately, I only have two Macs that need to be upgraded. If I had three or more, I'd consider paying $199, but I'm buying two edu priced copies instead. It's great being in college.

I think this is great! Sure you could take one copy and install on multiple machines but your butt would be in a sling if you ever got caught and prosecuted.

I do. However, my esteemed colleague and fellow keeper of the lore, you are mistaken: the name was "'n Touch." And the poetic posts which you recall correctly went something like:

    "Get 'nTouch.

    Stay 'nTouch.

    Going up?"

Truly obfuscatory, if I may say so myself. I got a letter anonymously from someone who was ICQ-ing the poster of said arcane poesy, who said that the information came from tentative meetings between Apple and the marketing industry.

However, it is always wise to keep a salt-shaker handy.

Jesus, I had a gut feeling about mr.macjones. I think this story will have legs. I think a whole glove license will happen real soon.

Can you imagine how awesome a single site license will be for Apple?

Too cool, what were the other rumors he started again? Swwweeeettttt....

Thank you for the respectful answer. As always, my sieve of a memory failed me. It looks like our youthful poet's visions were not nearly as accurate as Mr. Jones'. I wonder whether we will really be able to replace our Canon PowerShots with an Apple Lucida in the near future.

If only youth sprang as eternal as hope, we would still be in our formative years when Apple introduced the ear-implant PowerMac with free, self-updating OS.

refresh my memory, David's Stone? Lucida I remember well enough.

Was David's Stone something about a Goliath killing Software strategy?

Anything from the recent OSX.2, family licensing to a Office Killer could qualify

Are we seeing parts of david's stone already?

One could only assume, given the name....

Possibly making reading , sharing, & saving windows files absolutely transparent on a mac, but my sense is that David's Stone is a larger strategy.

I have a sense that we are: Mr. Jones mentioned that it was the "big one" an overarching strategy. I think first indications might be coming from somewhere as odd as .mac with its associated iSync, iCal, etc., as you mention, Matsu

Apple needs to show not just ease of use and cool looking machines, but the real-world advantages of owning a mac (i.e. efficiency, etc.)

As Jobs indicated (and digging at MS) Apple was doing things that others (i.e. .net) could not. With these applications, .mac is becoming a center of one's "digital" life: putting your calendar, files, etc. all accessible anywhere. If the calendar for company meetings, or a school calendar is on the web, from there all users will see how "cool," easy, and helpful it is to use a mac. Possibly then, the installed base might increase, as others see the advantages.

iTools is really quite an amazing service, all in all, already. With the Quicktime capabilities, the sharing, the protected folders, etc. it is a very tidy little bundle, and excruciatingly easy to use. But this can not be all:

What I would hope would be bundle into .mac eventually would be small business services to go along with the calendar, syncing, file-sharing, etc. What a killer it would be if for a little extra on your subscription (Since .mac already has you there, the costs of competitors could be undercut), one could add credit-card processing or other business capabilities to a .mac site. This would be a huge help to small developers. Other possible capabilities could be "user folders" where a student could log into his folder on the "Matsu Teaches Skepticism 101" class site, and check out her grades, download the latest course material, submit her papers... and pay for the class perhaps as well.

Suddenly, by Matsu's hypothetical use of the .mac services, his 30 students all see the advantages.

I am really guessing here, but I think we are, as you suppose, seeing the tip of the iceberg which will be David's Stone. It probably has to do with both transparency (perhaps lucidity?) and convenience for the primary user, but also increasing the visibility and usage of the service, spreading the penetration of our favorite OS and machines exponentially.

    Hope springs eternal.

The best of: WebCT + First Class + eBusiness = .Mac ultra?

Roll in teleconferencing and you're really talking.

I've supervised a course section over webCT and it's not bad.

I can see how it could be extended well beyond the education model, but even within the edu market alone, a super easy, flexible tool of that nature could get a lot of the big cammpuses around the world hopping happy to buy macs. Still such a set-up would require at least a limited cross platform client for full acceptance. Then again, maybe not, so long as tey stick to open standards. Rendezvous? hmmm...

Does this family licensing exist outside of the US? Anyone, anyone...?

I already purchased Jag for $129. If I wanted to get the family plan, will Apple have a deal for upgrading to this plan?

It's Apple's fault for not announcing a family plan earlier. They should have done it at MWNY, but now most of the people who would have paid $200 for OS X have already pre-ordered the $129 version and have to intention of canceling their order. I think Apple missed the boat this time around. How about offering a familiy plan from the start when you start pimping 10.3 Apple?

yeah, i called to change my order and even though it did not say it on the Order Status page, my copy had a shipping document ready and was ready to be shipped. the guy sent out a request to cancel my order and he also said that if i wanted to, and I got my original order, send it back and order the family plan/

I say, if it gets cancelled, I go to reseller friday night and get a family pack and if it does not get cancelled, i installed it on my computers, because i am not going to wait because they wanted to be secret about their stupid family plan!

There is always something odd about how People ( the Masses ) are lead by the nose. I think that those who post on Apple Boards such as this are more savy than most Computer users. Yet we all seem to think that APPLE should and could make a machine for EVERYONE.

In fact they try to please all, but this is impossible.

They want the Busness User, the home Word Processer User, the DVD makers, the Audio freaks, the Movie Makers, the Web Designers.

They can't make Something for everyone.

If APPLE Upgrades the MACHINES, we bitch that they are too Expensive or they arnt what We wanted.

Fustration at APPLE must be at all time highs.

" What the Hell do you want from US? "

My Feeling is that Sometime next year, You will see some stuff out of the APPLE drawing Boards that will blow us away!

if you think about whats happened since Steve Jobs Came back, we are lucky to have a Mac OS at all!

Apple has jumped threw hoop after hoop to please Developers, Users, and the PRESS.

I thank APPLE for everything they do. OK so I bought OS X.1 too soon, now I got to fork over another 69 bucks for Jag. My iBook wont run Quarts Exstream, I can't upgrade my iBook to take advantage of it. ( But I don't HAVE to buy Jag!)

Theres a lot I can't do with the set up i have.

I have to wait untill I can aford a new System, and will wait for the next round of upgrtades before buying.

Always with APPLE you have to do your research before you plunk down your cash. this iBook is 2 years old and has many more years of service to Someone if not me! the kids? The Ex Wife, A buddy at work who can't aford a New Mac?

I knew when I bought it that it had a bout 2 years worth of work for me before I'd want to upgrade. Just about right as things are workin g out.

Having said all this, Its good to bitch! Apple does listen, and take action when they Can.

but they have to Stay Profitable or eles we won't have Apple to Kick around anymore.
