10.2.1?

I tried to order Jag-Wire through the Up-To-Date program (I bought this machine right after MWNY) at AppleStore Germany and noticed something strange:

"Mac OS 10.2.1 Fulfillment-Kit". 10.2.1? Is that just a typo, or are they already sure that 10.2.1 will be done by August 24th?

Cuz' ETA is "24-Aug", which last I heard was the 10.2.0 release date.

I really would not at all be surprised if a 10.2.1 update was ready to the time people get 10.2.

6C115 is chock full o' bugs. Apple needs to get an update out as soon as possible.

I would like to think the final boxed version of Jaguar would be damn near perfect before I open my wallet <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" />

Some things are out of Apple's hands, really. The OpenSSL security issue was only discovered after Jaguar went GM, so already 10.2 Jaguar will be insecure out of the box if you use OpenSSL...

When has anyone released a major operating system upgrade without any bugs?

i personally would be quite happy if i install 10.2 and then hit software update and see 10.2.1 waiting...i love software that is constantly evolving and improving...don't sell me something and then wait 6 months to collect a 1000 of so improvements and bug fixes before updating like some companies do....give me the fixes as quickly as you can....g

Even Microsoft had a major bug fix after XP was released. I suspect Apple will have a few updates throughout the rest of the year.... including iPhoto (at Paris Expo?), etc. No big deal. No reason not to buy/use Jaguar.

I also don't mind if there is an update. I mean, MS or Apple - it's just one button to push and it's automated from there. Sometimes they just don't catch things before they go gold (or deadlines won't allow them to address them before being released).

Also, there is something re-assuring about a '.1' version number (like 10.2.1). It's as if that '.1' means that any last minute problems were addressed and everything was double checked and fine tuned. Of course, this is just a mental thing, but it works.

Yes, like, you wouldn't install 10.1 on a machine now without updating to 10.1.5, would you?

I also think that updates like that make me feel more comfortable.

What kind of bugs? Hmm, lots.

iChat disconnection bugs, several different Finder FTP bugs, broken system sounds, the recent security update for 10.1.5 isn't included, security issues with sharing a computer that has password-protected servers mounted, Finder window resize bug, internet sharing settings not maintained after restart, Finder info pane "open with" bug...

Enough for ya? Or shall I find some more bugs to post?

Yes. Because i'm wondering whether it's really worth updating from 6C106 to 6C115 if that's buggy.

So we should wait until 10.2.1 is released beofre updating??? Is 6C115 really that bad? I mean, I'm running 5S66 and it has bugs too. Couldn't 6C115 still be better than 5S66 or 6C105 despite a few bugs. I'm sure 6C105 has just as many or more than the GM.

"Buggy" seems to be sort of an overstatement. As far as I can tell there's nothing in 115 that will prevent you from doing anything you normally do. It's fast and clean as far as I can tell. There are some things that need fixing (system sounds and FTP in the Finder) but they're not show stoppers and won't interfere with anything.

I second that. I really haven't run into many problems with 6C115.

What I find incredible is that there are some bugs/issues from 10.1 still present under 10.2.

Like the issue when you plug/unplug the SoundSticks a couple of times (I rarely switch off, so this "a couple of times" might take some days), then some USB related kernel module decides to commit suicide and BANG!--kernel panic.

Or the audio disrupting bug that you encounter every time there's music in the background and then you start a fast download (&gt;100 KB/sec, more or less, otherwise is less noticeable): it starts with pops in the background audio, and after a little while everything goes silent, and your only option is to reboot to get sound functionality back.

But we've new ones too, like for instance the DVD player that in the middle of a movie says that your new X-files DVD is scratched, or maybe it can decide to say that somehow your region-code settings have changed and you're not allowed to continue using that disc--and then quits.

    How about that?
