Reasons to upgrade from G4

Hello, I work in tech department at a school. We have 2 iMac G4 17in that we use to make videos for the kids on respect, ect. As our shows are getting quite alot better recently the guys doing the videos asked about updating. Id like to update to 2 new macbooks, but I need reasons why we should upgrade.

I figured it would save time encoding, making ivds, ect

Buy new now and use for 5 years (we got iMacs 2 years ago, quite used)

and updated software will give a higher quality show.

Anything else you guys can think of, I really appreciate it.

Thanks in advance

I think you should wait until the iMac is updated before making any purchases. If you do not like the new model then start your search for used iMacs because people will be trying to sell off their "old" iMac to get the newest one.

The metal Macbooks don't have firewire so make sure you still have a method of capturing.

As for the speed, the Intel chips are much faster at encoding than the G4s. Making a DVD on a G4 can take well over an hour but on the Intel machines, it can take just 15-20 minutes.

On average, you should see at least a 4x increase in speed in raw encoding.

If you want to get a laptop, buy now. If you want a desktop, hang off for maybe 4 weeks or so.
