So: what do we want in 10.3?

10.2 looks fantastic--but i'm sure we can come up with more.

    ANY way...

    I'll be having

    10 - 12 hours of battery life

This will probably depend on hardware improvements, too, but i'm sure they can do more in the OS.

It's not bad now--but it could be better.

Almost instant isnt the same as truly instant.

    I want truly.

    Finder "remembers" location of windows.

Whenever I create new Finder windows (Command + N), I have to drag them (I always make 2--usually to move stuff between them) around into the right place.

It'd be really nice if the Finder could "remember" where I have ever had windows, and do some math to average the placement out, and then put new ones in those places for me.

The first one I make would go up top--and would be short and wide. The next one would go on bottom--again: short and wide.

And it would do that becuase it has "watched me" use the system.

If I always had one big finder window that covered most of the desktop, it'd make em big.

If I had to long/narrow ones side-by-side, it'd put em up that way.

Hmm, that kinda gets me thinking. What if you could hold down a key combination or a button combination with your mouse and drag out a new Finder window at the exact dimensions you wanted from the Desktop in one step?

Maybe I should get more sleep since that doesn't sound like it would save much more time than hitting Command-N, repositioning the window and resizing.

I thought with the advent of Jaguar, all the stupid little bugs regarding the Finder's inability to remember its most recent size, type and position were taken care of. Are you suggesting they are still there??

    1) To remember a window size, open a folder, set the size and position, and immediately close it again. The size should now stick. This has been the same since 10.0, maybe even the Public Beta.

    2) When certain windows don't remember the view type, it is **not a bug in the Finder**!!! This is a case of the user either messing around with the root user and inadvertently screwing up the privileges on their .DS_Store files, or said user has installed a "theme" or some other poorly-packaged software whose developer forgot to remove his own .DS_Store files from. Thus, when installed as an admin user, the .DS_Store files get owned by root.

I repeat: the Finder is doing exactly as it should, respecting the ownership settings on these .DS_Store files!!

So, what do you do if you want to fix this? Simply run Apple's Repair Privileges app.

No no, i'm not saying that the Finder "messes with my prefs" or can't remember what size my last window was...

I'm saying that I want it to be smarter about it.

If it "knows" that i--say 70% of the time--have two finder windows open like in my screen shot above, then when I open two in quick succession, it should put them just like that.

What it does now is open one in about the right place, and the second one about 40 pixels down and right from the first one--and then i have to move the second one down below the first one.

I also would like the finder to respect the dock. When you maximize a window, it should never ever ever go up under the dock, no matter where it is.

    Brad,

I already know the workarounds for some of these things. I was merely saying I thought the improved Finder in Jaguar had as part of its improvement, usability changes in these areas.

For example, on my system, if I move the Finder window to a specific location and then close it, it doesn't always re-open it in that spot. Even if I do nothing between closing one instance and opening another. Similarly, if I resize the window and then close it, it does not re-open a new instance at that size.

It should, and users shouldn't have to do any jerry-rigging to make it happen. It should just work without having to think about it, ya know?
