ATI Retail Radeon and Jag Problems?

There are threads on the MacFixit boards as well as on the apple discussion boards about Kernel Panics being caused by the ATI Retail Radeon 8500s when installing os X. (This might be particularly pertinent to those with 2X slots, not 4X slots.)

Here is my question: before I enter the 9th circle of hell by trying to upgrade with my retail Radeon 8500 installed, has anyone installed X.2 successfully with one in their machine? More specifically, on a 2X AGP machine?

Is this just a few clamoring or is it a general problem?

(Just in case, my machine is a 500 Sawtooth)

Hoping eternally that this is going to work....

I have a 466MHz DA machine (AGP 4X) with a PC ATI 8500 card flashed for the Mac BIOS. It worked with out a hitch. Maybe the problem is restricted to 8500s in the pre-DA machines with 8500 cards. Did you upgrade the BIOS to 1.26 yet?

Boy, you are talking a little above my head. By "DA" you mean digital audio? I have a Sawtooth, which I think is AGP 2X. I am not sure what Bios is in my Radeon, though I bought it only a month and a half ago. (How would one check?)

I noted one BIOS upgrade on ati's site, but it looked like it was from Sept 2001. Is that the one you are talking about?

Boy I hope this is not a show-stopper for me.
