Have an older Pismo Powerbook... I will keep this a little longer 'till I can afford a new Macbook Pro. I looked at the possible processor upgrades... Not too many around but I noticed that most require a working processor daughter board to be sent in. Does this mean they just "pop" in a G4 processor and send it back? The ones I found were rated at 500-550 Mhz... Odd - why not anything faster? If the upgrades are just a processor popped into an existing daughter board, can I get the processor anywhere like I can for a "PC"? My ideal situation would be to use a PowerPC 7447a that was used in the last G4 Powerbook... But I don't know enough in that regards. Thanks for any advice - help you can give me.

I think you would be better off trying to find a used Ti Book or something to fill the gap. Too risky & pricey for a machine that's about a decade old.
Watch the refurb & closeout page on apple.com/store. some of the older MBP sell for as little as $1249 & you can still get applecare.
