hello,

people seem to be getting different results on jag quality depending on which method they used to upgrade.

(plain upgrade over current osx, archive and install, clean (erase drive) install)

I was hoping people could post the following to help on future upgraders.

    Archive.

I updated my iBook yesterday, and tonight I'm archiving. The remember of finder windows seemed to be fixed with I archived my G4, but was still there on my upgraded iBook. I don't know what other little bugs are floating around, so a fresher start would be nice.

    Archive and Install

This method worked great for my G4/350, and it didn't take as long as some people hinted at. I also chose to keep my Users/Network Settings. The major thing that I noticed was that the StartupItems directory was not longer present. So, I used the Terminal to mv the entire directory back to my /Library, and everything was cool.

Some apps that I have heard don't work:

    Netbarrier 10.0.3 - update available

    Timbuktu 6.01 - update available

Retrospect Client 5 - update available

NAV 8 - startup items don't work - no update yet

NUM 7 - no update yet

    Drive 10 1.1.1 - no update yet

    Pseudo 1.2 - update available

    Erase and Clean Install

I backed up to my newly acquired FireLite drive, erased the 10GB HDD of my iBook/500/320/CD, and did a clean install of Jaguar without OS 9/Classic. My iBook is 15 months old now, and it was time for spring cleaning and reformatting my drive anyway.

For all intents and purposes, Mac OS X 10.2 is now equivalent to or better than OS 9.2. This is the first time I'm comfortable enough with OS X that I haven't bothered to install OS 9 at all.

    Escher

PS: I also think it makes sense to erase and clean install for the major system update that Jaguar represents. I wanted to start with a clean slate for all my preferences and settings (except for e-mail/junkfilter configs and Chimera bookmarks, which I kept).

I ended up doing the clean install with erasing the HD. Jaguar seems much quicker. Startup time now takes 45 seconds on my machine, although today it seemed much quicker than that. 10.1.5 took 1.26 minutes. Mail is improved a lot and I'm happy with it, mail in 10.1.5 was horrible(!) i thought. My surfing speed doesn't seem to be quicker like some people have said. Windows seem to be snappier opening, though i'm not sure how much the spring loaded feature helps that.overall i'm very happy with it. I can't compare it to 9.0 because i never used 9.0

If I understand correctly, archive is equivalent to erasing but it just moves your old stuff to a folder. Once you delete it, it's all the same. Especially if you back up your home directory and then move it back.

    Erase and Clean Install

I did this for my g4 450 and everything works wonderfully.

    Upgrade

Did this on two machines (yes I have the family fun five fnégly pack) and they both do not have Rendezvous for some reason. They do not work with the iChat "can't start Rendezvous session". So, i am hoping that there is an update soon to fix that.....

I would suggest, Archive and Install, as I saw myself bringing over a lot of my backed -up users folder..... the things is i Erased because there were problems with Invalid trees and leaves on my disk, so i decided to repair and clean install! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

Hello all glad to see the boards up again. ok here we go:

    Archive / Install

    mac: ibook 600 dual USB

overall feeling: bad / then great!

i installed with archive and install (custom setting with only the epson printer drivers and the rest i left on by default.)

I also made sure i checked the "copy and use the current users folders" maybe the problem?

here's the deal. it seemed slow. yep slow. Also it left old IE and sherlock in the dock ( I guess thats correct for IE but sherlock would not launch (was trying to launch sherlock 2) and get this, sherlock 3 yellow pages did not work. if i typed in "pizza" it came back with no entries. terminal launch time was slow BTW

They whole setup felt slowish and since this is my backup machine i decided to go back and do a clean install. Which i did . took around an hourish. not too bad. left all options in (printer drivers, languages)

    guess what.

WOW. what a diff. this is the jaguar i was expecting! everything worked right off the bat. sherlock works GREAT! i can't live without it. finder seems zippy (do not have hundreds of files in any single folder yet.) terminal came up in 2 bounces. faster time on relaunches for all.

over all I am very impressed with jaguar. bravo to apple.

also, the software basestation works great! and was simple as pie to set up.

I guess the moral of my story is archive and install is not the same as a clean install.

MacWorld's website has published the install article from the upcoming October issue.

<a href="http://www.macworld.com/2002/10/features/install.html"; target="_blank">http://www.macworld.com/2002/10/features/install.html</a>; is the link to it.

Migrate to OS X 10.2 with a Clean Install

    DATELINE: October 2002 Issue

    By Dan Frakes

"Before you can enjoy the benefits of OS X 10.2, you first need to install it -- which may not be as easy as it sounds. Although you can update your existing OS X system to 10.2, you may encounter several problems (including crashing applications) after doing so.

To avoid this, we suggest using the installer's new Archive And Install option, which installs a complete version of 10.2 and saves everything from your previous OS X system. (Once you've chosen your destination volume for installation, click on the Options button, select Archive And Install, and then select Preserve Users And Network Settings.) The best part is, this option moves your Users folder -- retaining your accounts and settings -- as well as the contents of your Applications folder to the new system. There is still work to be done to get everything back to the way it was; however, we're here to help with the manual labor..."

Cloned my HDD to an external back-up and did a Clean Install.

Is it me or is Internet Explorer fricking fast?

I didn't bother doing a clean or archive install, since my iBook is brand new, and hasn't been used at all. After going through the setup program that lauches when you turn your computer on for the first time, I immediately upgraded to Jaguar.

I figured skipping archive and clean install would be safe since my computer hadn't had the chance to be filled up with all the junk that makes upgrading unstable.

So far, every ting seems to be fine. My iBook is fast and Jaguar hasn't crashed or missbehaved once.

Jag rocks BTW!!! Like going from 10.0 to 10.1.

    I've done numerous Jag installs:

    Beige G3 - 6C115 Fresh Install

    iMac 333 - 6C105 (fresh install) Upgraded to 6C115

    iMac 333 - 10.5 Upgraded to 6C115

    PowerBook Ti 500 - 10.5 Upgraded to 6C115

All of these installs have worke successfully. Monday I'll Upgrade install Jag on a G4 Quicksilver 867. (Been waiting for the SSH security update.) I'll let ya' know how it goes.

I've loved the new LCD Sub-pixel antialiasing on my PowerBook, but I can't wait to try it on my 17" Flat Panel. Oh boy!

Erp, I see color fringing even on the PowerBooks, especially with small type. I'm going to stick with the standard Quartz anti-aliasing.

i saw fringing but only when i chose an option other then the one that said, "best for LCDs"

I tried to do an Upgrade, but got an error and had to restart the install. Unfortunately, my system folder was 'broken' and I had no choice but to do an Archive & Install.

Which fortunately worked even better, it seems. Speed is increased over 10.1, windows remember their positions and shapes... overall, it seems to be the best way to go.

I always try it a few ways, myself. At first, I just installed Jaguar from the CDs onto my old 10.1.5 system. I took forever, like 3.5 hours, to complete the installation. Then, I played with it a while to see how things worked in it. It was alright, but I found a few quirks and slow reactions from the system. Now I have a clean install. I deleted my hard drive, and it is all fresh. I have no issues currently. YAY!

Me too Em, I have Slick trnsitions for iMovie, and i's a bitch to install in OSX. I'll do any thing to avoid re-installing those files. Upgrading seems fine to me.
