How isolating hare "isolating earphones"?

Hi guys,

I play the drums, and often like to play along to music with my iPod. For this, I'm loking for some new headphone gear since the soundproofing headphones I currently use suck so bad that even with volume at max they are too quiet (too high speaker impedance I guess...)

So I was looking at those so called isolating earphones (pretty much all the middle to high class earphones with a rubber ball thing that goes into your ear canal) and was wondering exactly how well they insulate in general. Anybody have any experience in really noisy situations?

And, in if these models would be suited for me, what would you recommend in the sub $100 price range? (I'd prefer around $50 tbh but slightly higher suggestions are welcome) I was thinking Sennheiser but keep reading their consumer range is overpriced.

Many thanks.

They "isolate", simply by creating a better seal within the ear canal to keep ambient noise out. Compared to the ear buds that come with iPods they are MUCH better.... compared to "over the ear" insulated headphones, they are not as good (assuming they fit you properly).
