Got a new MB today, and I was wondering why the HD is 149 GB and the setup took another 20Gb, while it originally is supposed to be a 160Gb HD??

There are a number of reasons why it's smaller. The first reason is that the general computing sales industry claims hard drive sizes based on a 1000 byte system when it's "really" 1024 bytes. 1 MB is 1024 bytes, and 1 GB is 1024MB. But they count 100GB as 100,000MB instead of 102,400MB. So the larger the drive, the more inaccurate that advertisement is. The actual drive size is "always" smaller than the number on the box because the computer itself displays the correct number.

Another reason is that the various file systems used in computers, in Apple's case Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) also known as HFS+ take up a tiny bit of space just to make the drive readable.

Then you have the OS itself taking up space, in modern OS's it's about 8GB. So the remaining usable space once all that is tallied up is about what you're getting.

Thanks for the reply. However the Mac OS alog with iworks fills about 20Gb aside from the lost 10Gb, which is quite confusing and disappointing in the same time.

10Gb unaccounted for, represents 6.25% along with a 12.5% basic for the OS and iworks (nothing else yet added) makes an almost 20% that vanished from the drive
