iPod mini (4GB) songs won't delete

My girlfriend's iPod mini is full and won't accept any more songs. I tried deleting songs from her iPod the way Apple says to do it, but while the songs did disappear from her iPod song list, no new space is being freed up. I deleted several dozen, but still can't add even one new song. And the status bar at the bottom of iTunes, showing how much space is free, changes with every song or two deleted, but it goes up and down, randomly. Help?
