How much actual storage on new Nano?

Hi,

I've searched but could not find an answer. Does anyone know how much open storage there is on the new 16GB Nano. Basically how much of the 16GB is already filled out of the box with all the programs, games etc that come with it. Just trying to see if my 12GB library will leave me no room for further expansion.

Thanks in advance

I can't speak for the new iPods, but I have a 3Gen iPod Nano whose (apparent) capacity is 8GB. The problem that you have to keep in mind is that this means that the iPod has 8,000,000,000 bytes of data storage, yet when the computer adds up the amount of storage it counts in units of 1024 bytes (2^10 bytes) rather than in units of 1000 bytes. This means that when I plug it into the computer, it ought to read

    8,000,000,000/(1024^3)= 7.45 GB

This is the way that ALL storage works on the computer: if you have a 250 GB drive, your computer will register that it has

    250,000,000,000/(1024^3) = 232.83 GB

Both are "accurate," it's just a different way of counting.

Just for the record, my 8 GB Nano, which ought to register 7.45 GB when attached to my computer, only registers 7.40 GB. So I lose 50 MB. I also have 85 MB in the "Other" category. I have no idea what this means. But the upshot is that I have access to 7.31 GB when I should have access to 7.45 GB. If the "16 GB" 4Gen model has the same proportions, your computer will register

    16,000,000,000/(1024^3) = 14.9 GB

but you may lose another 100 MB or so to "Other" files. Whatever the case, I'd imagine that you'll have at least 2.5 GB to "grow" into the 4Gen iPod Nano. Hope that helps.
