There are now *two* ways to "get info" on something. The default is what you have found. This is how it had been with every Mac OS until OSX. Many people were upset and frustrated that the info window dynamically changed with your selection and that you couldn't have multiple info windows open.
The method from the previous Mac OS X is still available. Simply hold the option key when you "get info" on something. That will use the dynamically-changing info pane that you want.

Apple + Option/Alt + i = "Inspector" which is like it was from 10.0 to 10.1.5
