I need a small light digital camera for night time photography, I wont pretend I know anything about cameras but used to hang with some photographers back in the days of 'film'

Hopefully to photograph aurora, which needs exposures to about 30 seconds.

so I know I need a camera with bulb setting, cable release and a tripod. Thats about it. I have been reading camera pages/specs etc, so I guess its all done with remote control and such these days. Thats ok.

However, there is a catch, I really dont want a big digital SLR, what I want to know is if there is a quality pocket sized digital camera that allows the above.

Something like a high end canon Ixus or Cybershot?

I have looked, and looked some more, but i dont really know what im looking for?

I'm a fine art photographer and still shoot film but there's a camera that does increments of 15 secs, 30 secs and 60 secs and has a night mode metering system that's relatively small called the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3. It comes with a compact 24-60 mm lens and can also be fitted with other inter-changeable lenses including a very wide 18 mm wide angle lenshttp://www.dpreview.com/news/0807/08...nasoniclx3.asp

If the £400 or roughly $600 is too much try the Panasonic Lumix DMC- FX35 that also goes up to a 60 secs exposure time with a night scenery metering system. It also comes with a built-in flash and is smaller and lighter. http://www.digitalcamerareview.com/d...sp?newsID=3389

    Thankyou,

I know i asked this a long time ago, and after some more searching, I've settled on a Lumix TZ-5, which allows up to 60 seconds - as do most Panasonic cameras I looked at.

Quite why most other cameras are limited in this sense is beyond me.
