os X equivalent of chooser

I know someone already asked about this, but i was searching for the thread and I can't find it...

What is the OS X equivalent of the Chooser in os 9? I'm looking to try and find other computers on my network (up at school) and search through their files... My roommate with XP Pro can do it just by going to "my Network Neighborhood" why can't I search other people's files like he can?

You should be able to do this in the Finder. Convenient, eh?

Jesus H. Christ, I hate UBB.

    <a href="ftp://user:[email protected]/"; target="_blank">ftp://user:[email protected]/</a>; should do it, or <a href="ftp://[email protected]/"; target="_blank">ftp://[email protected]/</a>; and it'll prompt you for a pass.

Careful with this feature until 10.2.1. It'll lock up your computer requiring a forced reboot. It sucks that it doesn't work, but it will rock when it does. :/

hmmm, doesn't seem to work for me, is it a problem that the network is windows-based? I rememebr someone asking in the old thread how to connect to windows servers... and thats what i want to do.. his ? was never answered

What version of X do you have? If you got 10.2, OS X should automatically recognize Windows computers (does on my Mac), if you have got 10.1, you'll have to manually type in the address of the machine in the Connect To... window.

an often overlooked 'detail' is that file sharing is not enabled on the PC

right click on the harddrive icon and select sharing...

You've tried using "connect to server" and the browse window doesn't see any other machines? You should be able to see windows machines just fine. You're using 10.2? A little confirmation of any of these questions would help narrow it down.

Any advice on how this works with VPN? I set up a VPN server at work and can connect, although no drive shows up on the desktop and nothing appears in the server list when I [COMMAND-K].

This is true in 10.1, but in 10.2, you can browse for any other machines in the "Connect to Server" dialog. I just hooked up my Dell to my new iMac that way. Have you tried turning on personal file sharing and windows file sharing in the Sharing systems prefs panel?
