I mean, the blue and white screen that has the scrollbar is fast... goes by in like 5 seconds, then 5 more seconds to get to the login screen, and maybe 10-15 to get the hd to stop spinning after the desktop appears. (however, Snapz Pro slows me down)
My problem is that the black and grey screen with the apple logo is there forever! Like 1 minute just on that screen. After that the startup is fast. Is there something wrong here?
I did a clean install on an erased hard drive. (well, I installed 9.2.2 first so I could use classic)
Jaguar starts up slow for me.

Same here. I just installed the 0823 Security Update, which required a restart. From the startup chime to the moment when the dock appeared took 120 seconds (2 minutes)! This is on an iBook/500/320. I did a clean install of Jaguar after erasing my HDD.
Mine boots in under a minute, i was changing the start up apple, the one at the gray screen, while talking to a friend of mine. I told him i had to restart, we where on aim, and he is like ok. Less then a minute it later... No way did you restart that fast heh
Even just when fellow 'PowerMac G4' owners are comparing times.
All IDE (as well a All Firewire) are not created equal. Each update to the system board can/could/does change how good/bad fast/slow IDE (and Firewire) operate. Also going from a 5600RPM drive to a 7500RPM drive could also explain speed differences. Finally even with most things being equal a 7500RPM can have different cache sizes and that too could make a big difference...

I know there are many factors that affect boot time. Even so, you would think everybody's bootup would get faster than it was before, not some getting faster and some getting slowed down.
my QS867 boots in 45 seconds in Jag. the new hard drive with a new/clean install helps im sure.
My kids imac dv 450 boots in 70 sec, but that was an update install of jag, and the 13gig5400rpm drive is all but full so that probably adds to the boot time.
I am getting another WDcaviar disk for the imac, i got one for my QS and it nice. Hopefully it will help the imac last another year or two.
I put 10.2 on my G3 Powerbook with 128 megs of RAM. I counted the time from pushing the start button to being able to work in the OS. 70 seconds. Not too shabby.
One thing to consider is that the more RAM you have, the longer the RAM check at boot is going to take. I bumped my Pismo up from 256MB to 384MB, and there was a definite pause that wasn't there before, under 10.1.5. I can't imagine how long it must take with RAM banks approaching a gig... yeesh. (Okay, so I can... 1:26 at 704MB... )
Well, I installed 10.2 last night on my wife's iMac (640 megs) and it is noticeably slower when I'm logging in and out. Mail seems a little quicker.... it unmounts my external drive quicker too. But it is definitely slower than I expected.... my wife is QUITE disappointed

Yeah...I want Apple to eventually get it down to 30 seconds. But any increase are a welcome addition.

Shouldn't that be decrease

I wonder what you guys are doing?

Escher
The two machines where it seems slow on the grey screen are G3s. I didn't look at how fast the G4 starts up.
By the way, OS 9 had a way to disable memory check. Is it on or off by default in OS X and can it be changed?

10.1.5: 2:02
10.2.0: 1:26
Classic
10.1.5: 1:46
10.2.0: 0:29
classic without extentions starts up in under 15 seconds!
ti800
1gb ram
btw i disabled the following
ldap2&3
network time synch.....
anything else in inetd.conf & system has sped
up slightly
nb if you run ssh then leave that alone......
oddly enuf the hourglass seems to appear more often in 10.2 than in 10.1.5.....so jag may
not really be all that quick...they may simply
be faking it in some instances...
also the fan seems to come on more quickly....
