I am trying to do a lot of scanning of old photos & family letters and about at 3 or 4 scans I get the FOREVER beachball. Force quit. Run shutdown, restart then works for a little while, then crash again. Any ideas what I can do? Replace the scanner? HP does not provide drivers for Apple. Formerly the scanner worked well with the VueScan driver. Thank you.

Check to see if Image Capture works with the scanner. It's in Applications.

If the scanner shows up as a device and opens, you have to drag over the image to select the scan area and it will allow you to scan.

It probably won't given there's no driver in which case You'd have to suffer out Vuescan. Do you have the latest version of Vuescan?

Also, given that you have an Intel Mac, you can use Parallels or VMWare to run Windows and use the drivers that way.

Given how cheap scanners are, a new one may be the easiest route such as the HP G2710:

It has drivers for the Intel Mac up to Leopard.
