Audio over mini Displayport????

Does anyone know for sure if audio is carried over the new mini-DisplayPort on the late 2008 MacBook/MacBook Pro??? Some say it isn't because USB is required on the 24" LED ACD for audio... others say that USB carries audio because it also needs to serve two-way communication with iSight.

So, we KNOW that when you hook up a unibody to the new 24" ACD, you must use the USB to get audio out the ACD speakers. But, if you hook up the unibody MacBook to your HDTV with an HDMI adapter, does audio go through the mini-DisplayPort and the HDMI adapter into the TV and yield sound?? There is TONS of confusion about this on the net. Please don't add to the confusion with replies like, "Sure - why not?" or "My aunt heard at bingo that it works" --- thanks!

The Mini Display port does not transfer sounds, only video.

And no need the get all pissed off. People will respond when they can, and if they can.

Not everyone is a forum troll 24/7.

The DisplayPort architecture suppors an aux channel for audio or other signals but it may not be working currently because Apple uses USB for the audio and iSight signals for their LED 24".

I'm guessing that DisplayPort tech has firmware that can be upgraded to endable features.

Are you sure that this also counts for the mini version of the display port?

Yup the Mini-DP connect has ever single pin (20) that the full size connector has.

    DisplayPort vs DVI

    Quote:

    1.Based on micro-packet protocol.

Allows easy expansion of the standard

Allows multiple video streams over single physical connection (in a future version)

2.Designed to support internal chip-to-chip communication

Can drive display panels directly, eliminating control circuits and allowing for cheaper and slimmer displays. Aimed to replace internal LVDS links in notebook panels with a unified link interface.

    3. Supports both RGB and YCbCr encoding formats

    4. Auxiliary channel can be used for touch-panel data, USB links, camera, microphone, etc.

    5. Fewer lanes with embedded clock reduce RFI.

    6. Slimmer cables and a much smaller connector that doesn't require thumbscrews. Connector pins don't run the risk of bending if improperly handled.

7.The DisplayPort connector is easier to connect when guided only by touch.

Ah ok. Never really looked it up. Just was under the impression that the mini version didn't do audio.

    Thanks for the info :-)

Audio is over USB on the MBP, period. End of discussion.
