Buying advise, first mac ever! :)

Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying my first macbook, instead of buying another windows laptop I wanted to get the 17-inch macbook pro as I don't want to downgrade to a 15-inch model, but looking at the posts it seems like it's not certain whether a new model will come out in January. I wanted to wait till January to see if a newer version is coming out, if not then go for the current 17-inch model. Would that be the best thing to do?

Thanks in advance!

It depends. Apple upgraded the MacBook and 15" MacBook Pro recently, so most people expect the 17" to get the unibody make-over early next year (beyond the modest refresh it got in October). Right here at Apple Insider there was an article claiming that the new 17" was supposed to ship with the others, but manufacturing problems delayed the release.

But here's the "depends" part: with the refresh comes the take it or leave it glossy screen. The current 17" is the last computer Apple is selling that gives you a matte option; if you don't like glossy screens you should probably grab one-- the performance upgrades on the new model will be modest.

There's also the less vexing issue of dumping DVI in favor of mini display port-- if you plan to use your laptop with another screen you already have, you'll have to buy an adapter.

Of course, if glossy is OK with you, the new body design is quite a bit nicer than the old, and you should definitely wait.

If you don't mind the glossy display, definitely wait for the new Unibody 17" model. It may happen as soon as MacWorld just two weeks from today.

    And it's advice, not advise.

Thanks for the response guys...I definitely don't mind the glossy display as I currently use a vaio with an x-black display. I will wait and see what happens in January but either way I will be buying something..Can't wait to be honest I know it will take me time to get used to macs but I have friends who switched from windows and don't regret it at all

    "And it's advice, not advise"

P.S. Should have realised that I am using it as a noun and not a verb...Thanks for pointing out anyway.

I am in the same boat. If they do not release the 17-inch in Jan, I will go for the 15-inch unibody version. The old 17-inch will have no re-sale value in 2 years. Plus, apple is still selling the old 17-inch at over-priced value (around 2800$, refurbished one around 2100$)

I dont care about the glossy/ matte BS. If you do not like glossy, you can use an antiglare cover from

I currently use it on my PC laptop screen, also protects against scratches etc

What about buying the 17" hi-res model with 2.6Ghz processor? If the new one comes out it might just have a modest bump in specs (according to what I read)...Confusing!

i foolishly ordered the old 17inch thinking that I was ordering the new 17-inch. Yeah it sounds stupid but this was my first mac. Who knew the sleezy tricks apple is upto? Fortunately I was able to cancel it before they shipped it.

Then I talked to an apple customer representative and he advised me to get the new 15-inch because of the latest technology - unibody design, hybrid graphics, glass touchpad etc

    I agree with the guy.

I am still going to wait till Jan5 for the 17-inch unibody version

Assuming you know about MWSF that is. Even if you don't how much work are you going to get done in the next two weeks anyways.

In any event you talk about a 17 inched like that was the only parameter of concern to you. If that is your only concern buy a big boy now. However if the new technology that held up the new 17 inched might be of interest then wait. Until we know what that tech was no one can say if it is worth it. If you discount the holidays the new MBP is just a few days away.

Another option: A new 15" MBP and a third party 22" or 24" monitor. The cost would be close to a 17" MBP.
