App for annotating images?

Hi all,

Anyone have some suggestions on a decent, small, cheap/free app for adding text to images? Photoshop is overkill, GC is so-so with text, Preview is nice, but defaults to fonts/colors I don't want.

I suppose I'm looking for something very task-specific. It should deal with helping to make the text legible if the underlying image is too bright or dark where the text lies, some nice shadowing, good antialiasing, etc. In short, if I want to make something like a screenshot of a browser window or something and circle things, add descriptive text, it should do that well enough for publication.

Ideas?

I'll even fire up windows/vmware if necessary.

Thanks!

Paintbrush (http://paintbrush.sourceforge.net/) or Seashore (http://seashore.sourceforge.net/) will probably does the job for you.

If you do use Windows, you might want to look at an application called "Paint.NET".
