My Mac OS X is acting strange at startup...

Hi. Just this morning I tried to boot up my iBook it took six (6) tries to get it booted sucessfully. The first time it got stuck on "Starting Retrospect Startup Helper". The other five (5) times it seems to have booted but it got stuck on the blue screen that appears before your desktop appears. You know, the blue Unix-ish login color. Anywho, after six tries it booted up. This has never happened. I'm running Mac OS X 10.1.5 with 384 MB of RAM. It SOMETIMES get hung up on startup and in that case I just restart it with ctrl-cmd-power and its fine the next time it comes up. But this was the first time it took six (!!) times to get started up properly. Just as a precaution, as I'm typing this to you guys I'm running a Norton Antivirus scan on my hard drive to see if there's a virus lingering on my drive or not. If that's not the problem then I don't know what's up. My hunch is that it's that stupid Retrospect Helper startup task thats causing this. Before it used to be the "Starting Accounting" task.

All suggestions and remedies are welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

PiBO2k2

Try reinstalling the program that it is hanging up on. If that doesn't do anything, I personally would just clean install X again, then for sure the problem will be gone. One other thing make sure you have to lastest updates for the software that's hanging up your startup. There may be something that in conflicting because of an old version.

Anyway, I have no idea what your problem here is. Have you tried running a disk repair utility like "fsck -y"?
