I am the biggest fan of the new iMac, and yet (new Powerbooks and Powermacs when?)...

My acquisition of the big bucks is going to take a few more weeks (getting yerked around with claiming my severance package), which means that by the time I do get it, the new Powerthings might have arrived......

Projected usage: FCP3 primarily. I am gunning to be editor (and eventually digital filmmaker) extraordinaire.

Current purchase plan: new iMac with Superdrive. I am willing to live with the smallish screen for a cheap, powerful Superdrive-equipped box.

Yet, the competitors that loom on the horizon:

The upgraded Powerbook. I seriously doubt that it will have the Superdrive, but it might have a much better resolution (although not as bright) screen, and would be portable for doing on-the-scene work. Can't beat portability with a stick.

The upgraded Powermac. Right now, the Powermac is not worth the money over the new iMac. If there was a significant upgrade to the motherboard to allow DDRRAM and maybe FW 2.0, then it would suddenly justify it's price. (Contrary to many, the processor doesn't concern me as much as the bandwidth). Also, I can get dual monitors, or a large monitor, and add HD's out the wazoo for less than FW drives. Also, dual procs or more powerful procs will be a secodary boon.

My worst fear is that the money will come (I think the end of January), but the new Powerthings won't, and I'll just be torturing myself, waiting.

I know I should just wait and see, but what would you do if:

iMac G4 800 MHz

100 MHz FSB

Superdrive

60 GB HD

limited additional storage

1024x768 15" LCD (good quality)

small, elegant, cool

$1800

(proposed) lowend Powerbook G4 667-733-ish

133 MHz FSB

Combo Drive

30-40 GB HD

limited additional storage

1152-1400x768-900-ish 15.2" LCD (fair quality; hey, it IS a portable)

portable

$2300-ish

(proposed) Powermac G4 867-1 GHz-ish

266 MHz FSB (DDR 133 MHz)

Superdrive (probably a BTO upgrade)

60-80 GB HD

multiple additional bays

PCI slots

1280x1024 17" LCD (excellent quality) - $800-ish

Powerful, expandable

$2500-ish

If this comes to pass, what would you buy?

Please note: I don't really give a rat's ass about your theory on G4 vs. G5 in this thread. It's been hashed to death elsewhere. Processor speed is about 6th on my concerns list.

Advice, please!

Well, if you decide to get a new iMac instead of waiting for the new PowerThings?, you'd still have to wait until February as that's probably the earliest most people will get their hands on one.

Were I in your shoes (and thankfully I'm not given the thrashing you've received over the G5 (*cough...lack thereof..cough*), I'd yank the powerbook in a second. But I fear the pricepoint may be a wee bit low.

I'm on a 667 (slower HD version) right now, and am quite happy w/ the performance, enough so to keep me from going to a tower again any time soon.

That, and the thing just looks damn impressive <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    This again???

Different people have speculated dates ranging from Jan 22, Feb, March, April, May, and MWNY.

The truth is that no one here knows.

Oh, I know no one knows.

    But I have angst, see?

(And I don't think I've been spanked in quality about the ongoing G4/G5 issue. Now, quantity, OTOH..... )

Well it comes down to needs I think.

Do you need to travel, do on site work-then PB

If not, then iMac. iMac has brighter screen then PB so I'd go with iMac if you don't need to travel and has better sound with pro speakers.

If you need power and expandability then wait for the towers. They will be the fastest, and hold the most memory, more plugs, etc.

Easy to decide if you ask me

Frankly, I don't know what I'll be doing, so it's hard to even guess if I'll need a portable or not. I'm just getting started in the world of FCP and DV.

In other news, someone told me that the Seybold conferences are ideal breeding grounds for Powermacs, or at least that the original G4 was unleashed at Seybold SF.

Here's hoping things clear up on 2/19.
