Migration Assistance / iTunes / external hard drive

I just bought a macbook air to replace my pro due to heavy travel. The air is great in concept, but when I went through the migration assistance process from the pro to the air, I realized the significantly different storage limitations. In short, my iTunes library is larger than the entire available space on the air, due in large part to video files. The only solution I can think of is to move my iTunes library to an external hard drive. Keep in mind I am not a pro when it comes to this stuff. However, I'd like to go ahead and migrate everything without the iTunes library. I was told I could pick and choose which apps to migrate, but see no such choice during the process, just the choice of my name file. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
