We really need to get a filter for new users and posts. A VBulletin mod that does some sort of preg_match on content or something. The same video encoding software gets spammed every other day. Signup blockers like Captcha won't always help because a few of the spammers are signing up manually.
Basically, the check would test that if a user has under 10 posts and they have posts containing certain keywords, they are immediately moved to a waste thread.
Yes, the spam has become rather amazing as of late.
As this thread is up and will likely be viewed, how about a tip for everyone on how to report spam? Then, if it does get through, we get get rid of it quickly.

I've always used the red exclamation mark on the left of each post to report spam. But even then it can sit around for a while. I'm still curious as to what Ars does. They just never seem to have any. It's not deleted quickly, it just doesn't appear. Bliss.

Isn't that what moderators are supposed to do? (wink wink, nudge nudge to the mods)

Yeah but as much as we'd love to watch the forum 24/7, it's not humanly possible to do. Generally spam doesn't stay on the forum longer than 24 hours but there isn't a sufficient feature to prevent it appearing. It doesn't make much sense to keep having to delete spam when it's the same stuff over and over. It would be far better to recognise it once and just have a filter to stop it coming back again.
That wouldn't remove the need for moderation, which also involves telling people off for personal attacks, moving/closing threads etc.

I count no less than 14 spam threads on the first page of General Discussion at this moment. Whatever the Admins do, or have done in the apst, to remove /stop spam, it just ain't working. The place is infested.
How about an Admin outlining AI's plans to issue a Cease and Desist or something!
Maybe even if people with under 5 posts are only allowed to post 1 new thread or message in a thread a day. This means that they can't make say 10+ spam threads in a single day. Just one thread means it doesn't interrupt the forum much and the most damage they will do is a single thread or post before being removed.

But us regular posters do... Heh just kidding. Keep up the good work and hope you'll be able to sort out the spam issue.

I think that would be a good idea.
