Choose this model if you want extended storage. It contains 32GB internal flash with a SDHC slot which can hold another 32GB. Quality should be stellar as its predecessor (HF10)is a standout in performance though it has half the memory. It's still available for about $600.
This is a tape based camera that does HDV as opposed to the AVCHD codec used in the HF series. HDV camcorders yield larger files but are easier to edit because the compression is lower and based on MPEG2 rather than AVC. The downside here is that you can only ingest the media at realtime as compared to tapeless camcorders where you input the video as datafiles over USB.
I'm not a Canon whore either but the Canon stuff of recent years has been the lineup that sets the market for quality.
Don't be afraid to go with one of the models that is being closed out namely the
HF 10
HF 100
DV30
They all sell for sub $600 on Amazon but the replacement models will be back up to $800+. Typically Canon's support on Macs has been good. Never had a problem with my ZR950 and that's with iMovie HD and the new iMovie 09

Vixia HF S100
Choose this model if storage isn't as large a deal. It offers the same quality but records solely on a SDHC card.
