You could try booting into OS 9, then you can go to your extensions manager and disable any extensions you don't think you need. That'll save startup time. If there are extensions or control panels that you know you'll never need, like nVidia drivers if you have an ATI card (or vice versa), you can go to your extensions (disabled) and control panels (disabled) folders and delete them.

I disabled a whole bunch of control panels and extensions, which makes it boot much faster in Classic mode, and it should be more stable that way too. Here's a list of the extensions I disabled. Your list may vary depending on whether you need any of those or not - you'll have to decide that.

    ATI 3D Accelerator

    ATI Radeon 3D Accelerator

    ATI Rage 128 3D Accelerator

Do you mean booting classic environment in X? Because in Jag there is an option to boot into classic with all unneccisary extensions turned off.

Do this, in extensions manager select 9.2.2 Base. Then start removing if you feel that is not slim enough.

David Pogue's Mac OS X book has some good suggestions for creating a separate Classic boot set (with tons of extensions turned off) and keeping a full OS 9 set for when you want to boot in 9 with everything you might want turned on.

If you have an ATI card you need the extensions in Classic!? That's hardware, I thought that was all handled by OSX... <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

You can disable all of the ATI extensions in classic mode....you're right, OS X handles driving the video card.

I've got an OS X extension set that lets me start Classic in under 40 seconds. Very nice!

Is there a site that talks about this?

Are hardware things like the FireWire drivers, Ethernet drivers, etc, handled by OS X? Should I disable my Logitech MouseWare?

Hah! JYD, I got you beat - 18 seconds from when I clicked "Start Classic" in the pref pane until the window disappeared. It only takes 10 seconds with extensions disabled.

As far as booting into OS 9, I don't really have enough time to test that out and see how fast it is. I might check sometime.

Anyway, if all you want is to play YDKJ, you could disable everything except stuff having to do with graphics, sound, and I/O. So all your network stuff can go. Of course, if you're wanting to save HD space, not just startup time, then maybe you should think twice about deleting all your OS 9 extensions - the nonessential ones can go, but sometime you may actually want to use OS 9 with something you're disabling, and you wouldn't want to have to reinstall the system in order to get those extensions back.
