Best External HDD for Airport Extreme

Please don't shun me, but I built a really amazing Media Center PC hooked up in my family room. I just recently bought a MacBook and "made the switch" since I don't plan on buying a PC ever again. I need an N router to connect the two to facilitate file sharing (well, the MacBook can only read and copy from the MCPC). I looked into the Time Capsule, because on paper it is ideal for what I am looking for. But, I have read lots of negative reviews and it is a bit larger than the Airport Extreme. Currently I have a Mac Mini case that covers my unsightly USB hub, so I would like to get the Airport Extreme so they can easily stack and be aesthetically pleasing (I'm sure you Mac fans can understand me on that point). So here's the question:

What is the best external HDD to hook up to the Airport Extreme Base Station?

I would prefer one that is quiet and only runs when in use to preserve the drive's longevity. I know the Newertech Ministack has auto on/off with the Mac Mini, but does this on/off work with any input (like the Airport)? Something else I've considered is the LaCie d2 since it is stackable (I know it doesn't go with the Mac Mini case, but it is at least a unified/organized look). Or, is there some crazy awesome solution out there I don't know about?

If I were to get one of the Iomega drives I would want something more along the lines of the minimax. However the minimax is 8.75"x8.75" whereas the Mac Mini is 6.5"x6.5". Does the Iomega eGo have a fan and auto shutoff?

nevermind, I'm an idiot. The minimax dimensions are 6.5"x6.5". The initial informations says it's "8.75 inches square."
