I remember a thread a while back about enabling QE on unsupported Macs through the CLI. I have a G4/500 AGP and wanted to give it a try.

Can someone repost this? I cant find it w/a search.

Thanks

Umm, your Mac *is* supported if you have AGP.

The hack only enables Quartz Extreme for PCI Radeons and PCI GeForce 2mx/3/4 cards. If you have a card older than the Radeon, it is simply impossible to use QE.

Must be the graphics card then. I ran QE Check and it said it is not. I thought there was a way to make OSX use QE w/Rage cards.

Hmm, if not... ...I love the way QE x-fades the desktops.

Actually, the ATI Rage cards are *completely* unsupported because they are technologically inferior. They simply cannot manipulate the custom size of the buffers needed for Quartz Extreme to work.

    Sorry. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

heya all I just got Jaguar on Saturday and I LOVE IT!!!!! How much VRAM do would I need to utillize Quartz Extreme? My System Profiler says that I have 8MB. Is that enough? I think that I may be using QE because my computer is VERRRRRRRRRY responsive. It has the scaling effect when you open and close windows etc. Please let me know if I can indeed run QE with my current configuration which I listed below:

iBook Dual USB 2001 Model 600 Mhz

    384 MB RAM

    Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar 10.2.1

14 GB HD (though i dont think that that would effect QE)

    12.1'' screen

    No Airport Card installed

    DSL Internet Connection

Your computer is not using QE because your 8MB video card is a Rage 128 which doesn't have the functions required to handle QE. There is no hack to fix this, the card just cannot do it. All responsiveness you are getting would be from other improvments to Jaguar.

ok cool. Like Apple says: " Get a new Mac for as low as $129.99." (Or something similar to that.)

In 10.1.5 i used to run sorta sluggish but now... ITS AWESOMELY FAST!!! and i have MIDI support without having to deal with the STUPID OMS software that would crash my OS 9.
