GUI question for Brad

Brad,

I've noticed that after a gaming session the icon for my CD-ROM jumps around the screen. This is documented in the Apple KB as "Mac OS X 10.2: Dock and Desktop Icons Out of Position After Quitting Full-Screen Game." Article Article ID: 107094.

While this is a rather minor bug, it can really annoy a type-A personality like me. Based on your understanding of the complexity of the GUI, how likely is it that Apple will fix this in short order? Could we see a fix in 10.2.2 or 10.2.3? Just wondering. Thanks.

The fault is not entirely Apple's, but mostly of the game maker. Some games that switch resolution return the desktop as it was before, but some don't.

I don't recall any of the specifics on this issue, but I believe there are genereally two ways of changing the screen resolution. A "cleaner" method that notifies the system and other apps and a "dirty" way that causes everything to get cluttered. Apps that use the former usually don't screw up icon and window placement/size when switching. The latter, as in your case, does.

Unfortunately, I'm not an expert in this specific area nor do I know *why* these situations arise.

    Brad,

Thanks. The game I'm referring specifically to is Aspyr's Medal of Honor: Allied Assualt.

The same thing happens to me and it irritates the hell right out of me. Perhaps an Applescript could be devised that would return the icons. I don`t believe that would be to hard.

Got that right. MoH:AA is sooo cool, but irritates the heck out of me sometimes. It really messes up KDXClient, so I try to remember hiding it before launching MoH, seems to help a bit.

It's also pretty much the only application that can lock up my machine on a regular basis (not just crashy, but sometimes kills the whole machine...). <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Sure do wish whoever does the porting for Aspyr would start writing dual processor aware apps as well... Like OmniGroup did with Giants. That was killer.

    Oh well...

If anyone manages to move an icon on the desktop (not the 'Desktop Folder', they aren't quite identical) i'd be DELIGHTED to hear of it.

Recordability seems to have disappeared from he Finder, and when you set the position of desktop icons 'normally', they move around inside ~user/Desktop/, but not on the desktop behind all the windows -&gt; irritating.

I can move my icons around the desktop and they stick... my icons always go back to the right places after games, even the ones that leave windows all scattered
