Quick Thoughts on iMac 24" Alum 2.4 ghz

I've been in the market to upgrade my existing iMac 17" Intel and have missed the last couple of rounds of refurb 24" Aluminum 2.8 ghz for $1199. Now they have refurb 24" 2.4 ghz for $1049.

Obviously slower processor and lower RAM, but aside from that they contain the same 2600 PRO 256 and the same bus speed of 800 mhz bus. I could upgrade to 2gb for ~$50 and basically have the same machine (minus 400 mhz) for $1099. Thoughts or negatives to this approach? Actual age? Ame I missing something with the display?

Thanks for the advice, I might pull the trigger.

Travis

i work on one of the 2.4ghz 24" imacs everyday, using FCP, DVDSP, Compressor, Soundtrack and little Color every now and then (on top of the usual web browsers, iTunes etc), and it does the job perfectly. I only have 2gb ram as well, and no issues.

Looks like a good deal. My 2 cents. Just checking... Warranty? AppleCare?

It's an Apple refurb, so it gets the year and qualifies for applecare.

But no sooner than I posted, the $1049 2.4 was gone and the 2.8 reappeared at $1199. So I decided to go with the 2.8.

Basically I guess I'm paying $150 premium for:

    - 400 mhz

    - 1GB ram (2gb vs. 1 GB)

    - 1067 bus speed (vs. 800)

    - 800 Ram (vs. 667)

    - A little newer? (2008 vs 2007, although warranty would be the same)

But at least I wouldn't have to order $50 ram from Newegg to upgrade, maybe a little more but I really hate playing the refurb/inventory game with Apple. I imagine this will suffice for some time to come.

Now the work goes into cleaning up the 17" iMac Intel for ebay.

    Thanks

I just bought the same iMac 24 2.8. I haven't owned a mac since the original Macintosh 512K my parents bought me when I was 17 in the mid 80s. Didn't need this mac with all the Windows PCs lying around my house but I've admired the iMacs from afar for years now, and I'm pretty excited to be back in.

$150 for that little bit extra future-proofing is worth it, in my opinion. Good luck with it!
