Macbook + iPhone format question

I've been lucky enough that my macbook has never needed a format, but this brings a question to mind as my drive space is getting more and more narrow. If I were to format my macbook, which my iPhone syncs to, what is the process of reconnecting my iPhone to sync? Assuming I have backed everything up as far as iTunes purchases and the like. Is there a process that could deactivate my phone until I contact AT&T or what? I know when I plug my iPhone into the freshly formatted macbook it will announce that it is configured to sync with another system. Just looking for some insight as to what will happen if/when I decide to wipe the laptop clean. Thanks.
