Early Mac Pro refresh?

Intel is going to introduce new (faster) Core i7 based processors in May and cut the prices of existing models. Can we expect to see a speed refresh of the just introduced Mac Pros (without changing the prices) at WWDC? Surely the dual processor 2.26GHz configuration is an eye-sore, and the performance is pathetic for single-thread, non-media applications...

I doubt we see many changes to the Mac Pro lineup. Apple's more concerned with the higher end SMP system.

Next year they can deliver a 6-core Mac Pro for 2499 and it'll be easier to swallow.

    i7 is NOT Xeon

Sure WWDC will bring something to the 'hardware'table.

    New Xserve probably

Isn't the Gainestown Xeon CPU's used on the new Mac Pros essentially a variant of the same Nehalem CPU architecture used on the Core i7 CPU?

Yes in fact the Xeon 3500 series is basically a Core i7 proc with ECC support.

Whatever you see in the enthusiast Core i7 market will likely have a Xeon counterpart save for some of the Extreme models that may be announced.

I doubt we see an early refresh of the Mac Pro. I think Apple is comfortable with their current offerings save for some GPU options which i'm sure will improve.

Doubt we'll see an update until the fall at the earliest. Then I would think they would hopefully redesign the CPU & memory tray to house 6 slots on the quad and 12 slots on the 8-core. If they use lower TDP CPUs that are coming up they can do this by making the CPU coolers narrower (the Quad actually doesn't have this problem. there is plenty of space on the PCB to do this now.).

    New Quads - 2.8GHz, 3.06GHz, 3.33GHz

    New 8-cores - 2.4GHz, 2.8GHz, 3.33GHz
