waking external monitor....

I was wondering if anyone knows how to awake your macbook in clam shell mode while being connected to an external monitor without mirroring displays? The computer seems to remain in sleep mode when the lid is closed and when an external keyboard is moved or the mice is touched nothing happens.

    are you using a hub? does it do the same thing if you plug directly into the macbook?
