2005 iMac G5 (need assistance)

Hello,

My 2005 iMac G5 was my first Apple computer. I still think she's a beauty, and as many Mac fans would say - I love my Mac! Anyways, these days I am having some problems with this computer.

Suddenly shuts itself off

I have had trouble turing it back on. At times I try unplugging the power cord (both ways), and any peripherals (USB, Firewire). Sometimes it works and other times no. I pretty much have to play around with it - but right now I can't turn it back on!

In case some are wondering, it is running Tiger, 1 GB of RAM, and I keep it running pretty much around the clock.

I would really appreciate some help from the Mac community. Cheers, Chris

brother, i have just gone through this hell. Same machine, same problems. Apple replaced the power supply last summer and that fixed it... for about 6 months. Then the problem came back. Apple now says I need a motherboard replacement for inability to start up my computer. Only after exhaustive research have I discovered that it is most likely leaky capacitors.

I just bought 29 capacitors to replace. Someone actually made a kit for it. It involves some pretty easy desoldering and soldering back on.

Check out this link to see if your issue matches the dozens of people's descriptions: http://www.jimwarholic.com/2008/07/h...le-imac-g5.php

    Good luck!

    Hello,

Just came back from the Apple Store, and had the power supply replaced. Unfortunately, the repair extension program Apple was offering is now over. The cost for replacing the power supply was $91 Canadian, plus taxes. I was told there was no labour charge.

The Apple Genius did have a look at the capacitors and said there were no problems. Here's hoping my first Mac will now last a few more years.

    Cheers for all your help.
