Font Spacing in Terminal

Why whenever I pick a font besides Monaco does the space between letters (kerning?) become twice as big, even when I make it 0.8 spacing? This used to happen on 10.1.x and now it's happening on my FRESH install of Jag 10.2.2. Any thoughts? I tried playing around with script (Unicode, Western) and no difference. Only Monaco has the proper spacing.
