From WallSteetJournal article...

Charlie Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Co. in New York, expects Apple to roll out a redesigned PowerMac computer by February, which also should add to sales. "They can't make their numbers without an introduction fairly soon," he said. Apple officials declined to comment on the rollout of any new products.

You know, if analysts at Morgan Stanley and elsewhere could track down an order of LCD displays placed by Apple at a critical time, making the LCD iMac a near-certainty even though Apple was still keeping it secret...why in the hell can't anyone nail down something like "Apple has ordered 200,000 units (SKU not recognized) from Motorola" or "Apple has ordered 200,000 GeForce 3 Ultra graphics cards..."

...ANYTHING that would point to a new pro machine?

My friend who works at Fedex told me he was on a special assignment a few weeks ago, to deliver CPUs from moto to Apple. They had to ship them FAST, so that they would be in Cupertino in time. Armed guards were there to protect the CPUs at Apple HQ....basically they have an underground bunker to stash the chips in.

Anyways, each chip was shipped in it's own package, and my friend said there were about 800,000 packages. He figured Apple wouldn't notice if they only got 799,999 of the chips, so he took one of them home.

I asked him what it was...all he could do was read off some numbers. It didn't say "Gx" on it. But he did say it's bigger than the CPU in his 7450 powermac. Hopeful, I asked if it had a for number code on it, but he couldn't find one.

So this guy, he mailed the chip to me, and I'm looking at it right now. It's bare, no markings. About twice the size of the 7400 G4 in my system. The only mark on it is really big, and it says "1.8" followed by something, but it was rubbed off somehow and I couldn't read it. So I don't know what it is.

All I can say for sure is that the chips were under armed guard at Apple HQ as of two weeks ago, secured in an underground bunker built to sustain a nuclear attack. Rumor is that Steve Jobs goes down there every hour or so to gloat over the new chips.

I hope you didn't spend a whole lot of time on that JD, because it sucked.

****, what the hell, I'm drunk and need to go to ****ing bed.

Yeah, we'll see new PowerMacs... turn your ****ing computers off, go have fun in the real world for a couple of weeks, and when you come back, order a shiny new souped-the-****-up G4 or a G5.

    There. Easy.

    JD:

You know? Assuming you are telling the truth. That's call stealing. Your friend is risking his job to do this. Plus he maybe in trouble other than losing his job.

I hope you are just joking.

I've seen that chip too. The one I saw is marked "68882" and is said to have unbelievable FPU performance.

JD's Acid trip aside, my question was a serious one. How do analysts find out about some orders, and not others? Do they get their order info from insiders, or is there some kind of business data that they have access to that we don't?

I agree with Moogs, that the information must be out there somewhere. But then again when does it become insider information with SEC rules taking affect. Is it legal as long as it is published for everyone's benefit?
