Hey there ppl, I'm on the hunt for a fresh screensaver. It's about time to change.

I've been using the "iX Xirtam" Matrix screensaver for a few months now and it's starting to grow old. So send me your tips on new or old cool ones you think I should try out. I've had & used rastafied, plasmatunnel, Flurry, abstractmotion & stratwars (ugly but funny =) before and liked those...

All suggestions gladly accepted!

Get Falling Leaves, Falling Snow and Killer Snowflakes. Those are all cool. Falling leaves is especially relaxing and pretty.

Other ones in my list that I like:

Black Light - Funky light and inversion effects with whatever is on your screen

Euphoria - Warping, rotating, textured surfaces of various colors (requires quite a bit of CPU)

Helios - Cool looking bubbles with little contrails flying out and around (very demanding)

    NeHeParticles - Colorful particle effects

Neko - Funny little cat that sleeps and cleans and runs around

SolarWinds - Rainbow colored trails spinning off into space

From my thread in " Software ". This is absolutely the best screen saver I've found to date. If you like 3D, if you like studying the planets of our solar system, if you just like outer space, you'll love this. Very detailed and accurate. You fly by the planets and their moons and get to study their surface while they rotate. As I said in that thread someone put a lot of work into this. Download is free. The full version is $9.95 ( a small price compared to the other 3D screen savers out there ) so a bargain as well. I usually don't push a product like this but I was very impressed. I thought this would be cartoon like but boy was I surprised. The screen shots on the web page don't do it justice. Mainly because they aren't in motion. If you have an internet connection when you get to earth the clouds are even updated to their current patterns!

Anyone find a screensaver that can be run in the background without a noticable performance hit? ix xirtram is the only one I can find that comes close to that (DP1250 here), that is, it doesn't noticably slow down minimizations of large windows (that's how I check)... Maybe this was a hidden feature for good reason...

Actually I tried Cosmosaver yesterday and was a little disappointed. I thought it was gonna do like a roller-coaster ride through our solar system. But instead it was very uneventful, so I just found it boring.. Still, it's well done as you say but not really what I was after.

Downloading those fallen leaves right now..

Roller coaster? Oh well sorry it didn't float your boat. Good luck with the leaves all though if it's the one I think it is I found that kind of ho-hum.

This is the worst screen saver ever. Worse even then 'flying windows'.

All your others were great choices, thx!

<a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=15346&db=mac"; target="_blank">afri-schoner</a> looks cool. just double click the app, he installs himself in the right place (~/Library/ScreenSavers/)

okay, so I downloaded the "Falling Leaves" screen saver. I noticed that the backgound picture "floats" gently, as usual, while the leaves in the foreground move independently. Is it possible to create own screensaver similar to the falling leaves?

I have no idea about writing programs. I just want to know if it's possible to have multi-layered photoshop file that can pan or animate in screensaver. Better yet, is it possible to have quicktime movie or iMovie as screen saver?

WAY offtopic... but i went to see the Blue Man Group Tubes performance the other day, and one of the messages on the light boards from the not so distant future/present (you have to see the show to know what i mean) was "Macintosh screen savers... in 3D" it was a message for a cinaplex of the future or something like that...

kinda cool... just thought i would mention it
