I am looking to get another HDD for my Macbook after my Maxtor just died. I am looking for a 1 gig and I have seen a bunch, what is the best in your opinion?
Do you mean 1TB drive? I've had a look at a number of drives and I generally find LaCie's to be pretty good but they aren't the cheapest.
I personally like to be able to switch off the drives and you get ones like the Seagate Freeagent which only relies on your Mac sleep/wake to turn on/off and people have reported them just not waking up and I know someone who has this issue.
I also like having a metal enclosure to help dissipate the heat better and this puts me off Western Digital drives like the MyBook because they have plastic enclosures.
The Lacie ones come with quad interfaces too (eSATA, FW800, FW400 and USB2), are aluminium and have an on/off switch. They have two FW800 ports too so that you can daisy chain FW devices.
Another option to look at is buying a 3rd party enclosure and an SATA internal drive but I found that for decent quality in both, I was going to be paying close to buying a pre-built one.
This is another thing about Lacie drive too - you can open them up and replace the drive if it breaks. A lot of manufacturers seal the drives in. Some Lacie models do this too but the quadras are ok. They are also fanless due to the design so run pretty quietly.

Yep. Just swapped out the 500GB Hitachi (a solid performer-- not every external drive manufacture uses reliable drives inside their cases) in my Lacie, takes about 5 minutes.
I consider the initial cost to be worth in, in the sense that I bought a nicely designed, properly heat sunk and fanless quad port external case, that happened to come with a drive. Now, I can just put the old drives in a sleeve as I use them up and keep popping in a new one.
