Best Mac for Bloggers
My PC is dying a painful death. I'm considering going with a Mac, but have no experience or expertise. I work with a large number of open tabs and open windows. Cost is a huge issue.
My PC hard drive has less than 15% space and is about 4 years old.
Any thoughts on the best hardware configuration?
When I go to the site, all the extra add ons are confusing.
I want enough memory, space, ability to use graphics, etc.
I'm only familiar with Windows so do I go with the xp or parallels???
I don't even know what the difference is.
Just wondering what would be optimal hardware/software initial purchase, at the best price.
Many thanks!blogg

Boot camp allows you to boot into Mac OS X or Windows, not good for only occasional windows use. The latter two both let you open windows in it's own window and use it concurrently with Mac OS X.
What do you need windows for though? For the most part, you can do everything in Mac OS X that you can in windows.
Then get a 22" display like this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824009145
This would come to:
$650 + $150 = $800
for 22" 1680 x 1050, dual 2.0GHz, 2GB Ram, 120GB HDD, 5 USB ports, FW800, superdrive.
Alternatively, you can get a refurb iMac:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/FA...mco=MjE0NDk5Mw
for $800 with
20" 1680x1050, 1GB Ram, 250GB HDD, superdrive, 3 USB ports, FW800.
I think the best hardware configuration would be a Mini with a large screen and just upgrade the Ram. If it's for web browsing, I would go with Apple's 2GB Ram upgrade to save you doing it yourself.

I agree with you. Mini + another brand display.
You'll be blogging like a madman.

Can you use the mini in conjunction with your pc/laptop?
I don't have a desktop display. Because I travel alot, I use a gateway.
Of if I were to get a macbook what would you advise for minimum RAM and hard drive?

Nope, you can't really use the mini with the laptop. Since you travel a lot, the Macbook probably would be the better choice but the screen resolution is pretty low at 1280 x 800. I would say that it is much more portable than the Macbook Pro though.
Maybe you could get the Macbook and a cheap 20" display or something when you are at home.

2GB is a good minimum and they should come with that. Hard drive I would say 120GB is a good minimum but it's best to have 10-20% of your hard drive free. Add up all the files you have - music, documents etc - and add on about 20GB for OS X, 10GB for 3rd party apps and 20GB for a Windows partition.
If the total gets close to 100GB, I'd consider a 200-250GB drive, otherwise the 120GB should be fine.
