INSTALLED 10.2 NOW WEIRD STUFF--purple screen
imac dv 400 192 ram9.2.2
Weird stuff oh yea....restarted as directed, screen became like brushed denim look, mouse was a brown verticle rectangel, barely could recognize desktop, did a shutdown, and restartnortons disk saver popped open and did a disk survey some kind of disk error.restarted twice then. when stuff started to work made my os 9.2.2 my default OS. strawberry bubble screen now blended with osX blue, now a slight purple. made 9.2 my default , it took 2 restarts and now things like control strip and launcher work.
what happened, and why is my screen purple (strawberry blend with osX blue)

So i should have left well enough alone and not upgraded to osX. to add insult to injury, i have to contact you with my office laptop (dell/XP) I sure don't want to regret this. This has never happened to me or my mac since '84 mac plus.
HELP HELP
Should have read the read me file which clearly states "update firmware before installing".
The firmware update is even on the OS X CD...
now what to i do.
i thought i updated that last week, and if it was on the osx disk how come it didn't make any adjustments.
now what to i do.

If you arn't a computer geek (who can reset to factory settings et al), then send it to an Authorized Service Centre when they re-open. There isn't much else you can do.

zapping the PRAM a half dozen times in a row can help too.
how do i reset pram with a blank screen?
during install what was the reference to the "programmer" button next to the reset button, step 2 ( i could scroll to the remaining steps) said to press this, so what does this mean?
how do i reset pram with a blank screen?

Restart holding apple-p-r. Keep holding until you hear the chime a second and third time. Release the keys. Done.
any other thoughts.
You may have to borrow one, or take your iMac to an Apple store or some sort of repair shop. Just ask if you can hook up a second monitor so you can upgrade the firmware - they shouldn't charge you anything if you do it yourself.
Reinstalling won't help. Zapping PRAM won't help. Installing OS X dd not update your firmware. You have to run the firmware update manually.
The programmer button is the button next to the reset button on the side.
1. Hook up a second monitor.
2. Boot your computer.
3. Insert the OS X 10.2 CD
4. Go to the Utilities folder (i think it's in there)
5. Double click the iMac firmware update
6. Read the instructions
6a. Click continue - the iMac shuts down.
6b. Push the programmer's button with a paper clip while doing this, boot your Mac.
6c. When you hear the tone, let go of the paper clip
7. Dance around in your socks - it's fixed.
Apple knowledge base article # 75430 talks about it.

after i reset the pram 6 times, now if i use either the keyboard power button or on the computer it runs for a few seconds then turns off. i've done this trying with the os9 cd, reset my pram, or extensions off, nothing allows the drive to continue. also my os9 disk won't come out.
as per apple discussion boards, it's a common problem.
if i can get the os9 disk out (i even tried for the few seconds the computer is on using a paper clip to get the cd out, but no luck) i'll try using the os x.2 disk.
Should've followed the instructions...
SEB--very correct use a second monitor; bravo. imac has the av outputs, mine doesn't. some Imac dv400 slot, don't.
Here'e what he says, very common problem, the instructions are unclear. the programmer button had to be held down till the tone is sounded then release immmediately. I just pressed it in and thought the firmware was updated.
APPLECARE SAID THE FOLLOWINGF--to get the monitor on
DO NOT RESET PRAM, CAN HURT WON'T HELP
pull out the memory, and "let it rest 2 minutes, then re-install. reboot.
or press power button quick to put it to sleep then press any key to awaken it, maybe that works, if these two things do not help, take in for service.
service will pull motherboard exchange for one that has been upgraded, then load correctly the firmware then reinstall the original motherboard.
what they should have done, since there instuctions are cryptic at best ( i am partially vindicated--i'm not the only one that thought the firmware was installed properly as per apple's instruction set). since the firmware is on the osx disk, make this upgrade a forced gateway, namely let the osx disk load the firmware, confirm that it is installed properly befor osx can be installed. this way osx jag can't be installed unless there is confirmed firmware update. that programmer button is not held in long enough #1 problem people are having. too many people are installing it wrong and turning people off to the upgrade.
My closest service is 65 miles away in charleston, wv (next town over from the guy who won that 300 million lotto) So when this guy calls back i'll let you know. You that are close to service or apple store makes me jealous, and should be appreciated.
also, this problem will not affect the hard drive, so all my stuff is still there, i just can't see it.
THANKS for all of your help, and tell people to hold that button in longer till they hear the tone.
apple could have done a better job.
