DVD screenshot capture on MBP
When I play movies on DVD on my current HP Compaq Presario X6000 laptop, I use InterVideo WinDVD to play these DVD's and I use it's screenshot capture feature to capture the screenshots from the movies. I am considering holding onto the InterVideo WinDVD software after I get rid of my current laptop and using this InterVideo WinDVD software in my MBP (I'm getting it after the WWDC expo ends on June 12) to play DVD movies and capture the screenshots as I did with my Compaq laptop. Will this software work in the new MBP?

Full screen capture might be hard, it's just too much data and will result in dropped frames.
However use it on a DVD playing in window at native resolution, it will be saved as a Quicktime file. Then use that to play it back and enable full screen.
Oh yes you can then drag off frames onto the desktop as snapshots or use Command Shift 4 and drag a square around what you want to take a screen shot of.
All sorts of methods on Mac's, we do a lot of video after all.
Just for the adventure:
VLC makes this easy.
What's VLC? I hope I won't have to buy this extra. Yes, when I capture multiple screenshots from a movie I first pause the movie, and then I click the "capture screenshot" button, and the resulting image goes automatically into a certain folder. Can I do all this with VLC? Also, I want all my screenshots to be in full color and high-res (same resolution as the movie). Is this possible?
EDIT -
Hey guys - I did a bit of searching and I found this: http://www.videolan.org/support/faq.html
Look at this (quoted from the page at the above link):
"How can I take screenshots?
To take a snapshot of the video displayed by VLC, you just need to press the pre-defined snapshot hotkey:
Windows / Linux / Unix: Ctrl+Alt+S
Mac OS X: Command+Alt+s
To change it, go to Preferences -> Interface -> Hotkeys settings, check Advanced options, and set Take video snapshot.
You can also take a snaphot via the menu Video -> Snapshot.
To change the snapshot format or directory, go to Preferences -> Video.
Where are my screenshots?
If you haven't changed the snapshot directory in your preferences, your screenshots should go to:
Windows: My Documents\\My Pictures\\
Linux / Unix: $(HOME)/.vlc/
Mac OS X: Desktop/
To change it, go to Preferences -> Video -> Video snapshot directory."
Anyone know if this will give me high resolution (same resolution as the movie when it is paused) screenshots?
Anyone know if this will give me high resolution (same resolution as the movie when it is paused) screenshots?
It's the same resolution as the source video.
You can also switch between PNG and JPG as the image format if you're willing to dig through the preferences.
VLC is a great free video player.
Hey guys, I just downloaded VLC 0.9.9 from the link that I posted in this thread earlier. It's the vlc 0.9.9-win32 version. Does this mean that I can run it on the Windows XP side of my new mac (I didn't get it yet) to capture screenshots from DVD movies?
Thanks, Mr. H; I didn't know where to find the mac version. I've just downloaded it now.
www.versiontracker.com and www.macupdate.com are two places that you should bookmark. Will come in handy when you want software for your new Mac.
VLC is an excellent stand-alone player. However, QuickTime is a system-wide architecture for multimedia so it's also useful to extend its functionality with QuickTime plugins. Two that you should consider are:
Perian, for DivX (do NOT install the "official" DivX OS X codec, it sucks), FLV etc. etc.
Flip4Mac, for WMV and WMA
